The career of Vadim Repin – the violinist described by Yehudi Menuhin as “simply the best, the most perfect violinist I have ever heard” – receives a major retrospective in this 10 CD anthology of recordings made for Erato and Warner Classics between 1995 and 2001, repacked as a capbox with new cover art.
Repin was born in Siberia, and came to international prominence after winning the highly prestigious Reine Elisabeth Concours competition in 1987.
This set surveys the considerable breadth and the dazzling virtuosity that has distinguished Repin’s career throughout.
Showpieces such as Ravel’s fiendish Tzigane and popular works like the Violin Concertos of Tchaikovksy and Sibelius, Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Violin Concertos 2, 3 & 5, are balanced by lesser known areas of the violin repertoire…
….including Richard Strauss’s Violin Sonata, Stravinsky’s Divertimento and a disc of sonatas by Russian composer (and colleague of Rachmaninov) Nikolay Medtner.
Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky are celebrated in performances of their rarely heard Piano Trios.
A disc of Prokofiev’s complete violin sonatas is accompanied by Russian star-pianist Boris Berezovsky.
Two ‘concept albums’ include Tutta Bravura – an album of virtuosic works largely written by violinist-composers like Paganini, Ponce and Wieniawski – and Repin Au Louvre – music by Debussy, Ravel, Schubert and Prokofiev captured live in the splendour of Paris’s historic art gallery. Gypsy violinist Roby Lakatos joins Repin for a rousing encore.
Repin is accompanied by the Hallé Orchestra under Kent Nagano for the Shostakovich and Prokofiev works, and the London Symphony Orchestra under Emanuel Krivine for the Tchaikovsky and Sibelius concertos.
Legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin conducts Repin in the Mozart concertos with the Wiener Kammerorchester.
After a live performance of Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto, Repin was described as “The reincarnation of David Oistrakh. Without question Repin is the premier violinist of our time” in Concert Classic.
Le Monde de la Musique: “One wonders how Repin manages to find so much freshness and spontaneity in a work as well known as the Tchaikovsky Concerto…one is tempted to put Repin, with Milstein, Heifetz and Stern, at the very summit of a plethora of recordings.”

ps det er de originale cd'er der bare er pakket i en papæske - lidt ærgerligt at den nyeste Thaikowsky ikke er med, så kunne man have sammenlignet.
