In 1979, David Bowie recorded a small instrumental piece, much in the same vein as some of the Eno recordings on the second side of Low, to be the soundtrack for an advert he was starring in for a Japanese sake brand called Crystal Jun Rock. The song was originally going to end the Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album, and was later released as a Japanese single, and after that as a bside to Up The Hill Backwards so that British fans could stop paying over the odds for the imported Japanese single (released in Feb. 1980). It was produced by Tony Visconti, and featured Bowie stalwarts Adrian Below and Carlos Alomar. As nice as it already was, in 1994 Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor sampled the track and turned into the perhaps even more stunning A Warm Place, from that year's Downward Spiral LP. Personally, I love both versions, but think that the NIN track is one of the most stunning pieces of ambient music i've ever heard. Lovely stuff. Hope you enjoy them both.
