TORONTO -- After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech."

After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the rights to bring anime classic "Robotech," which featured giant robots known as mechas, to the big screen. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise.

"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Prods. Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") has been tapped to write the screenplay.

"Robotech" was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce; Jason Netter will serve in a producer capacity.

Matthew Reilly brought the project to Warners and is overseeing. Daniel Shafer brought the project to Maguire and will shepherd for the company.

The success of DreamWorks/Paramount's $311 million-grossing "Transformers" has other studios looking to assemble a giant robot movie of their own. Last month, Regency picked up 1980s Japanese anime series "Voltron," with Mark Gordon attached to produce. Ironically, Warners had the first giant robot movie back in 1999: Brad Bird's animated feature "The Iron Giant."

Maguire is repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Steve Warren. Zahler is repped by UTA and attorney P.J. Shapiro.

Det er måske værd at bemærke at det var den danske tegner Kay Nielsen, der var art director på sekvenserne "Night on Bald Mountain" og "Ave Maria".

Mamoru Oshii og Production IG laver nye sci fi Anime serie. De er mest kendt for at lave de to Ghost in the shell filmen sammen og det her lyder også lidt som noget GITS agtig.

Production I.G, the studio behind the Mamoru Oshii Ghost in the Shell movies and the Stand Alone Complex series, has announced that they will working with the franchise's creator, Shirow Masamune, on a new, original anime TV series called "Real Drive". Real Drive is co-produced by Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV), and will premiere in Japan on NTV April 2008.

OVERVIEW
2061 AD. Fifty years have passed since mankind developed the Network society. It was anticipated that this new infrastructure would realize a utopia where people connected with each other at the level of consciousness. However, new social problems such as personal data leaks and proliferation of manipulated information began to surface.

Nevertheless, people still relied on the Network to exchange information, and proved unable to opt to abandon it.

In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. This was called Meta Real Network, usually abbreviated as "the Metal."

The Metal accommodated personal memory data within protected virtual stand-alone organic cyber enclaves called bubble shells and eventually pervaded the everyday lives of people.

However, people gradually learned to release and explode their instincts within the secure environment of the Metal. The unleashed instincts pushed each individual's consciousness to drown in the sea of information and to be exposed to the pressures of desire. Meanwhile, norms and regulations continued to bind their real world lives. Thus, strange friction between the two worlds began to manifest themselves as aberrations beyond the bounds of the imaginable.

Experts who challenged the deep sea of the Metal to investigate and decipher such aberrations were called cyber divers.

This is a story of a cyber diver, Masamichi Haru, who investigates the incidents that lie between Reality and the Metal.

Nu sker der lidt mere mht. en "live action" udgave af Ghost in the shell. Endda i 3D.

  DreamWorks to Make 3-D Ghost in the Shell

     DreamWorks Pictures has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature, reports Variety.
 
The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the
Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting
technology-related crime.

Created by Masamune Shirow, "Ghost in the Shell" was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three video games. The second anime film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.

Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and brought the project to the studio. Jamie Moss has been hired to write the adaptation.

"'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

DreamWorks president of production Adam Goodman said "Ghost in the
Shell" is a property "that epitomizes 3-D live-action motion picture possibilities.

Så fik jeg endeligt set Evagelion Rebuild 01 You are not alone. Den er selvfølgelig meget flot animeret, men hvis man har set serien så er der ikke så meget nyt her. Den følger det del af serien med et par små tilføjelser. havde nok håbet på lidt mere nyt, men det skulle næste del til gengæld bringe. Bla. skulle der dukke nogle nye karakterer op. Har man ikke set serien kan man faktisk hoppe på og starte med at se Rebuild i stedet. Filmen er jo Eva så den får 4 ud af 5 selvom det var småt med det nye, men der er som sagt mange flotte billeder.

Desuden er jeg blevet opmærksom på den Japanske Vexille. Den er lavet af folkene bag Appleseed ( den nye ). Nogle der har set den?
Den ser flot ud og Empire gav den 4 ud af 5.
