LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)
Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21
Symphony No. 6 in F major, ‘Pastoral’, Op. 68
Minnesota Orchestra / Osmo Vänskä
Symphonies Nos. 1 and 6 make up the fourth instalment of the Beethoven Symphony Cycle with conductor Osmo Vänskä and Minnesota Orchestra, a cycle which has received universal praise.
Symphony No. 6 – the Pastoral Symphony – is one of Beethoven’s more popular symphonies. Beethoven sketched ideas for an orchestral work based on pastoral themes, but the sketches were laid aside until 1808 when he took up the challenge of combining two highly different traditions: the symphony genre and the pastoral idiom. As Beethoven scholar Barry Cooper states in his liner notes to this disc, “Beethoven’s great achievement was to reconcile two opposing elements, so that the work is thoroughly pastoral in character yet thoroughly symphonic in form.” The 6th is coupled with Beethoven’s first symphony which was influenced by his predecessors, particularly his teacher Haydn.
This release follows Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra’s Ninth Symphony which BBC Music Magazine designated a benchmark recording and termed “a Beethoven Ninth of our times” and an Eroica containing “one of the finest performances of the Funeral March ever recorded” (Classics Today). Vänskä’s Eighth was described as “terrifically taut, yet playful” (The Times), and his Fourth and Fifth were called “the modern Beethoven recording par excellence” by The Financial Times.

Christian Teztlaff - violin
Danish National Symphony Orchestra / Thomas Dausgaard
If Brahms’ Violin Concerto needs no presenting as one of the great concertos of the Romantic repertoire, Joseph Joachim’s Violin Concerto is lesser known to the general public, and it is noteworthy to say that each concerto was dedicated from one to the other composer - the Austro-Hungarian violinist, composer, conductor (1831-1907) dedicated, in 1860, his Violin Concerto to his friend Johannes Brahms who later dedicated his own great violin concerto to Joachim, in 1878. Joachim’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor "in the Hungarian Manner" is a long and demanding work for the soloist, which may explain that it isn’t performed regularly.
The brilliant German violinist Christian Tetzlaff has recorded extensively for Virgin Classics both in its early days and more recently as guest artist. His most recent recording for the label of Bartok’s Violin Sonatas with Leif Ove Andsnes proved a world-wide success for its genre and was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006. This recording is reissued as part of the new Recommends series on EMI Classics on the same date.

Christian Poltéra - cello
Kathryn Stott, piano
Malmö Symphony Orchestra / Tuomas Ollila-Hannikainen
Young cellist Christian Poltéra releases the third in his trilogy of discs dedicated to composers from his native Switzerland. Here he performs Frank Martin’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra which was written for the world-renowned cellist Pierre Fournier. The work has both beautiful, lyric passages and contrasting biting sonorities which combine to make a truly moving piece.
2007 saw the release of the first two discs dedicated to Arthur Honegger and Othmar Schoeck. The former, received high praise, for instance on website Classics Today, whose reviewer wrote: “If you want a superb collection of Honegger's music for cello, both chamber and orchestral, then this CD is just the ticket… a terrific way to plug what is probably a serious repertoire gap in your collection.” It has also received a Diapason d’or in the French magazine Diapason, which called it “une pure merveille”.
As on previous discs in Poltéra’s trilogy, he is supported by Malmö Symphony Orchestra under Tuomas Ollila-Hannikainen and by eminent pianist Kathryn Stott, who also shines in the Preludes for piano solo, a fascinating display of Martin’s broad variety of expression and techniques.

New original recordings and significant items were recorded live in Rome, 2005, to mark the 100th anniversary of Scelsi's birth. This Scelsi Festival ran for six months and comprised over 40 concerts and events involving all the major cultural institutions in Italy. All five pieces on the present recording are ritualistic and ceremonial in nature.
