Laurindo Almeida, Salli Terri & Martin Ruderman : Duets with Spanish Guitar
Her er music af Jacques Ibert, Heitot Villa-Lobos, Emile Desportes, Jayme Ovalle, Chopin, Laurindo Almeida, Francois Joseph Gossec, Valdemar Henrique, Gabriel Fauré, Paurillo Barroso, Ravel og Ernani Braga.
At the first Grammy Awards of 1959, Salli Terri was nominated for Best Classical Vocal Performance. The album, "''Duets with the Spanish Guitar'', " also featuring guitarist Laurindo Almeida and flutist Martin Ruderman won the Grammy for Best Classical Engineered Recording. On this 1958 Recording produced by Robert E. Myers, referred to by many as a masterpiece, Ms. Terri sang the aria from Heitor Villa-Lobos composition, "''Bachianas Brasileiras No.5''" that the composer declared as the best recorded version of his work. The album, with additions from later recordings and re-named "Duets with Spanish Guitar" was re-released in 1990 on a CD in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and in France and still continues to sell well.
Antonio Gandia (Ocean, NJ USA) - Superb, lush and enchanting!!!
It is very hard for me to be objective when reviewing this CD. I'm in the same situation as one other reviewer said, my father used to play this record frequently when I was growing up. Of course, as a little kid, you will not always make a note of such things, and may not even care about it. I had not listened to this record since the mid eighties (when our last turntable broke and we made the transition to CD's). As soon as I started listening to it I was taken back to that time of my life, and all of these memories which I did not knew I had came back to me. This record had been part of my life's "soundtrack". It would be easy for me to be over-analytical, since I happen to have a degree in music, but I would not dare to do so. The music is pure, absolutely beautiful. If anything, even though back when it was recorded it won awards for its sound quality, nowadays we have been spoiled with modern sound recording quality. You can certainly hear that the recording was not made recently, but it is the performances that count, and these will always sound as fresh and magnificent as the day they were first captured on tape. I will have to get a copy for my dad!
Oliver Ward (rocky hill, ct United States) - MASTERPIECE
First heard "duets" in November 1965 at my friend Lisa's dinner party in Washington, D.C. i remember being taken to a place i had never been before. while listening to this haunting music we were looking at pictures in a book called "The Family of Man". I have never tired of listening to this music. The guitar artistry of Laurindo Almeida is breathtaking. Salli Terri's crystal clear vocals and Martin Ruderman's fluid flute playing are enchantment personified. "Duets with the Spanish Guitar" is a bona fide masterpiece!!
Macwerk: Jeg har iøvrigt selv "The Family of Man", som er en bog med billeder fra en af verdens mest fantastiske fotoudstillinger!
Ellen Lambert (Outback, UT USA) - Voice of Heaven
I heard this CD about 3 years ago, I'd never heard of Salli Terri or Laurindo Almeida until then, but I was simply overcome by the clarity and sheer beauty of Salli Terri's voice. I made my friend play the CD every time I paid him visit, and have been on the hunt for a copy of my own since then. Salli died a couple of years ago, but she still, to me, has the most wonderful voice I've ever heard. Coupled with Almeida's artful mastery, this is truly a work of art.
Basil J. Whiting - A Romantic Classic
I first heard this as a 33rpm record in a Monterey, CA, coffeehouse in 1960 before proposing to my wife. I gave it to her as a weddding present. We wore it out playing it and I now, finally, found the CD. This is a hauntingly beautiful set of duets between guitar and voice and guitar and flute. Sally Teri is the voice as pure as the flute. You will find the themes running through your mind for days after hearing it. This is an all-time classic. Give it to your best lovers and friends.
macwerk skrev:Her i huset har Giora Feidman's klarinet kapret scenen.
"long live giora his clarinet and his soul music"
Star Record Co. (ST AE 76 A/B) US 1977.
Giora Feidman’s gifts prompt fans to gesture helplessly as they try to find the right words to despite his magical musicianship. He has the ability to turn the clarinet into a voice with unlimited expression; Feidman can express anything he wants to, whether it’s joy, sorrow, or anguish. All music he plays becomes his own, and emoting is effortless for this master clarinettist. He is a storyteller by way of his instrument – the clarinet laughs and weeps. Giora Feidman was born to Jewish immigrant parents in Argentina in 1936. He was influenced by Klezmer early on, and received classical training. Starting at age 18, he performed in the Symphony and Opera Orchestra of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. He was invited to join the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at 20, the youngest clarinettist to do so, and remained with this orchestra for nearly twenty years. Once he left the Israel Phil in the 70’s, Feidman embarked on what became a worldwide renaissance of the ancient Klezmer tradition, one enriched with elements from both classical and contemporary music. Now based in New York, he returns to stages around the world, either with a symphony or with his own quartet. In recent times, he has also returned to his birthplace, Argentina, working on a programme "From Klezmer to Tango", which bridges different cultures in a biographical manner. Apart from concerts and recordings, Mr. Feidman has been involved with film projects, such as collaborating with Itzhak Perlman in Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler’s List, which went on to win the Oscar for best score in 1993. In 2001, Germany awarded him a special award for his special efforts at ameliorating relations between German and Jewish nationals. As Leonard Bernstein once declared, "Long live Giora, his clarinet and his soul music! He bridges many gaps – generational, cultural, and social, and he does it with consummate artistry.".Det er dette citat fra Bernstein der har givet lp'en sit navn.
Tom Waits' Big Time
Screaming Masterpiece (aka: Gargandi Snilld).
"An unexpectedly satisfying documentary that Cannes served up was 'Screaming Masterpiece', subtitled "1000 Years of Icelandic Popular Music." A survey of that country's vibrant, creative rock scene, including interviews and performance footage from the likes of Bjork and Sigur Ros, 'Screaming' offers great music as well as a lively and informative tour of the country that produced it."

* * * * Berlingske
* * * * Ekstra Bladet
alfarvej."

* * * * CinemaZone.dk
* * * * Jyllands-Posten

The Big Reunion
The Big Reunion - Fletcher Henderson All Stars under the direction of Rex Stewart
Trumpets: Rex Stewart, Emmett Berry, Taft Jordan and Joe Thomas.
Trombones: J.C. Higginbotham, Benny Morton and Dickie Wells.
Saxes: Garvin Bushell and Hilton Jefferson, altos; Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, tenors; Haywood Henry, baritone.
Clarinet: Buster Bailey. Piano: Red Richards. Guitar: Al Casey. Bass: Bill Pemberton. Drums: Jimmy Crawford.
The highlight of the Great South Bay Jazz Festival on Long Island during the summer of 1957 was a pulsating, powerhouse performance by seventeen inspired musicians who came to revive the music and the spirit of the great Fletcher Henderson Band. In ensemble and individually they stole the show, and then it was all over excited listeners first rejoiced, then murmured sadly, "Too bad this was never recorded!"
Well, actually, it was recorded. The Voice of America had been there in full tape-machine force and for a while it looked as if the rest of the jazz world would get a chance to hear the sounds. But the AFM muttered an emphatic "no!" and that was that.
Still, the guys in the band, headed by Rex Stewart, who had organized and rehearsed them especially for the Festival, retained their enthusiasm and their desire to let the rest of the world hear what they had to blow. So we arranged to revive the spirited blowings in sterophonic sound at RCA Victor's brand new Studio A.
The results are contained herein. And how do they compare with what was heard at the Festival? All we can do is to quote one of the musicians while listening to a play-back on the session. "If only we'd sounded as great as this out on Long Island! Man! This is it!!"
