Tips and tricks * At the home screen, press Menu and you get a shortcut to the Settings menu item.

Cyrket - the Android Market on the webInteresting Applications Locale sounds great to me so far. Switches your phones status dependant
on location (using GPS, something the iPhone can't do apparently due to
lack of multitasking) so I could set it to always go on to the silent
profile when I walk in to the gym (keep it in a locker) and back to
normal when I walk out, and change from the not work safe wallpaper to
a more mundane pic when I get in to work etc.
* ChompSMS: SMS replacement.. tbh a must have makes text messaging look better. (Consider Handcent SMS instead)
* Toggle Settings: Quick access to specific settings data on off, ring profile etc
* Twidroid: of course only ifyou are a twitter user
* Hi MSN: MSN Messenger for your phone
* Shopsavvy: Barcode Scanner that lets you make list
* ixMAT Scan: Barcode scanner that does several differnet types of codes.
* Pkt Auction: handy dandy Ebay interface

* LAST.FM: Internet radio - Only in the UK and US Market. (Direct download:
http://one.xthost.info/tetek ) - Working
* gTranslate: Translate using Google Translate
* FTPServer - Good FTP Server for your phone.
** (Set your client to list dir with STAT -L not MLSD and deactivate passive mode.)* AndFTP - Great FTP/FTPS/SFTP client.
*Places Directory (by Google) - Location aware, shows you a categorized
list of nearby points of interest (Banks, restaurants, bars +++)
* gkcd - xkcd comic reader.
* NetCounter - Shows data usage on Wi-fi and mobile network (persistent with monthly, weekly etc. stats.).
* Talking Clock Widget - If you're so sleepy in the morning you can't see, just touch this widget and it will tell you the time.
SMS Popup - Pops up new SMS on the screen and lets you set a bunch of
options like reminders, vibration pattern, LED color. (Consider
Handcent SMS instead)
* AnyCut & dg QuickCut - Advanced shortcut
creator. Too much to explain here... Try adding a desktop shortcut and
select "Activity".
* Handcent SMS - Replacement for the builtin Messaging app - Replaces both Chomp SMS and SMS Popup featurewise.
* Qik - Live video streaming and video upload to popular websites.
Must haves programs* Shazam: Music recognition app. Awesome!
* Quickpedia - Easy access to wikipedia with a nice GUI (location aware).

Flickr Upload Encoding videos for the HTC magic I'll try to do a quick explanation about codec and applications for video clips you'd like to view on the Magic.
Supported codec* MPEG-4 Baseline profile 4.2 (Tested working flawlessly on mine)
I downloaded the new Transformers trailer from youtube in 1280x720 HD
and transcoded it to 480x272 30fps 600 kbps. It rocks!
Ways to encode videos
Downloading directly from video websites like Youtube # Install GreaseMonkey for Firefox
# Open userscripts.org and install Youtube HD Ultimate + Keep Tube
I'm
not sure what format Keep Tube gives on all the different websites, but
Youtube HD U will give you MP4 playable on the Magic.
HD MP4 from Youtube is not playable and needs to be re-encoded. Read on...
Transcode your own clips (top of the head explanation) # Download and install
Xvid4PSP.
# Start the program and drop a video file of any format into the video preview area.
# In the menu on the left select Format: MP4 and Audio Encoding AAC-LC 128k.
# Click on the (E) to the right of Video Encoding.
## In the upper right select Codec: x264
## Encoding mode: 1-Pass Bitrate (2-Pass does not seem to give a visible difference)
## Bitrate: About 600 kbps - But it is no point in setting it higher than the input file (Check it with Tools -> Media info)
## AVC Profile: Baseline Profile
## AVC Level: 4.2
## At the bottom click the + and Type a good name for the profile for later use.
# Now open the menu item Video -> Resolution/Aspect...
## Keep the resolution below 480 wide and/or 320 tall (Max screen res is 480x320 - videoes are played horizontally).
## Keep the Input and Output Aspect ratio as close to each other as possible.
## Don't adjust the second resolution number manually, or you'll screw up the aspect ratio!
# Check that the framerate is 30 fps or lower under Video -> Interlace/Framerate...
You're more or less done. If you are only encoding one file, click on Encode.
If you have several files you can click Save and it will be added to the queue, and you may open the next file.
Continue until you have edited all files, and then click Encode.
