Pro Logic 11x or Nero:6

I have a Pioneer Receiver VSX-D814 that allows me to use my 7:1 speaker setup, using Pro Logic 11x or Nero:6.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages when choosing either system?

Pro Logic IIx and Neo:6 are both systems that extract the different surround channels from a stereo signal, unlike Dolby Digital or DTS where you have the channels on separate tracks. Pro Logic is developed by Dolby Laboratories and Neo:6 by DTS.

They both work in somewhat the same way but are not “real” surround systems, in the true meaning of the word.

 

If I should choose, which I wouldn’t because I rarely use these formats, go for Pro Logic IIx. That is in my experience the best one of the two. If one of the true surround formats (i.e. Dolby Digital, DTS or one of their variants) is available you should however always choose one of these.

Thanks for the explaination.

I do use  the automatic button when playing DTS or Digital. 

I do use the 5:1 when playing DVD-Audio and SACDs.

But I enjoy the 7:1 sound when playing normal CDs, and sometimes DVD-Audio and SACD, although I know they should default to 5:1.

Should the Automatic find out for itself whether the recording is mixed for 5:1 or 7:1?
